This foil training day took place in Harrogate in November 2022. The theme of the morning shown here with some of the exercises used was the tactical aspect of movement on the piste, exploring how movement can lead to and create opportunities to score.

How did you build this dummy? It would be great if you can list the supplies that you used. Thanks!
Well it was somewhat improvised. I just worked with bits of wood, bolts, springs, hinges, some chain etc. until I had something which did what I wanted it to do. The end of the video shows a bit of what is going on with the arm. There were no plans or "list of supplies". He is currently on loan to one of our fencers
How do people rate these lessons compared to other coaches like Massalias?
I always like to watch other coaches lessons, there are so many things to pick up and learn from.
@@showwhite7320 Obviously I am not in this video, I am actually videoing it. These are all top level fencers and coaches. There are however, some videos of my coaching on this channel. I would suggest the best approach if you have chosen a coach with proven success in the sport, is to trust the coach to make the judgements over aspects of technique, tactics or approaches to training. After all, that is what the coach is for.
This looks fun
Great fun was had by all!
The algorithm brought me here today. Nice bout. Good control of distance by Mepstead. Also thought his disengage-fleche was very pretty.
Hi it’s Freddie you Tought men
Hope you're doing well.
Well I broke my hand and wrist
Oh dear! football I bet@@Freddie10
Yep you guessed it
In total honesty, that point in line call that I argued against Finn was completely just to try and have the point annulled to slow down his scoring, it very clearly wasn’t my PIL, but I just had to try and be cheeky 😂
Haha! I wasn’t going to say 😅
regarding the fight with Indie and Archie, I was totally wrong (btw) about the query of the falling over card . I looked into it. It was that the person falling couldn’t score a point in the new USA rules but the one still standing could, as opposed to the regular FIE where all points are nulled. (And I’m so dyslexic I’ve probably misread it again) Just in case anyone listens to the whole 3 hours haha. I knew I’d seen something on the matter but I had confused it with some other decisions in another tournament with slightly different outcomes.
FIE Offences and Penalties, 1st Group 1.17 "Irregular movements on the piste * : hits made with violence or during or after falling" - Yellow Card. So if a hit is made whilst falling, hit anulled and yellow card. Hit made immediately prior to falling, hit stands and no card. The opponent's hits stand.
23:20 good covering clip
Hi Adam good video
Thanks very much!!!
Wow Adam love it is me freddie one of you old students
Thanks, you are welcome!
Hi Adam I’m Oscar the person up you teach
Good watermelon wasn't it!
@@AdamBlight yes
Love that so much of the training was focused heavily on distance, timing and finding the right moment. Some really nice exercises 👍
Yes, the theme of the morning session was using movement to create opportunities to score (I stayed away from the word 'footwork'). One focus was to develop a sense of when to go and when not to go. Lots of what we did didn't get videoed, we had class sessions exploring key concepts, analysing videos and other exercises. I've been recommending your book by the way.
Seeing Welsh Team patches always makes me smile 😄
We also had Chinese and patches in one of our teams
@@AdamBlight It's really nice to see different nationalities being represented. There was also a fencer wearing a Jamaican fencing mask. That being said the Welsh patches always raises a smile for me as I designed it. 🏴
@@gethinap The Jamaican mask was Caitlin Chang, who was a national epee champion (Britain) but switched to Jamaica, also as we found out a food foilist.
This footage is excellent, thank you for sharing here. I'm using it as a learning aid for my own fencing.
His steps are perfect
Oh a 110% committed lunge, sorry
58:36 .. knee should be locked ? Always?
If the back leg has been used to develop the speed and push of the lunge, the muscles will be tensed on the completion of the lunge and the first stage of the recovery will involve relaxing these muscles, I suppose that if the lunge isn't depending on speed but perhaps reach or timing then this might not be the case.
As always .. a gem, thanks, nice to see these sessions back
Thanks, I've been out of action recently recovering from heart operations, getting back into it now.
one of you best lessons
Thanks Fred, hope you can pick out what the exercises are
@@adamb3635 gonna take my time and enjoy then use.
Any questions, just drop them here.
@@AdamBlight I picked up a warm up and a teaching lesson on the coupe and on the close out ( cross). Who you do a video on foil cueing. what they are and what actions are they to provoke
@@fred5399 "foil cueing" is not a term we use in Britain. How would you describe it?
British Fencing, racist organisation I have no doubt. Suffered horrendous racism as a level 4 coach. They destroyed my records, told me I was not qualified to coach, they were proven wrong, they conducted a whitewash inquiry, and still no apology. If you are brown or black stay away.
Hi hazlitt1, really sorry to hear about your experience, this doesn't sound very good at all. Anyone in the sport should be respeced and appreciated, especially a level 4 coach.
everything is orange. cool fencing

after watching your lessons for years I think these lessons with Iris are your best. They have helped me a great deal in my foil cueing. Thanks Adam and keep em coming.
Thanks very much, what with covid neither of us have been able to do much and there are no competitions to focus on. I've been experimenting here with having 2 cameras with wide angle lenses to cover the length of the space in addition to separate audio recording and editing using both videos, that way not needing someone else to do the camera work. Hopefully this will enable more videoing of lessons going forward.
Hey Adam, I really enjoy watching your lessons. They are very clean and look like a lot of fun for the student as well. Im glad you are able to put out a video or two! Since Iris was having some trouble in the beginning with breaking her time on her attack. I wondered if teaching them would be a good idea. It seems to work in certain situations and maybe the student would learn to choose a regular lunge or to do a 'broken time attack' - if you were going to teach it, how would you do it and under what circumstances would you think it an appropriate move? or, would you not teach it at all? Great lesson and well done Iris, She killed it! looked like fun.
Hi Cory, Thanks very much. Yes, I teach broken time in a number of contexts, most particularly where an opponent takes a late and more competitive parry. In this lesson the break in time wasn't such an error but I wanted the use of second intention, fencers can often forget about second intention options. Contexts where broken time can be used are where the opponent is doing something else (e.g parrying, stepping back, searching for the blade) so can't very readily make an attempt to hit, I have a number of lessons exploiting this. The risk is of course, as with counter-attacks, that it becomes a habit.
Great lesson! Hope you and Iris are well and look forward to seeing you both once we’re allowed back on the piste.
Thanks John, Iris and I are doing ok. Yes indeed, looking forward to getting back.
He won?

Nah mate, it's a foil. I guess the wide angle lens makes the guard look bigger.
Adam ... I check back to you now again .. sometimes I am rewarded .. thanks for my CPD (continuing professional development). !! Iris is a gem
Thanks Lee, I quite agree, Iris is a Gem!
My students did not understand how private lessons should look and feel, so I showed them this video. Thank you so much for taking the time to record and post it; it's a real service.
